Research Associate in Experimental Bone Biomechanics

This highly interdisciplinary post-doctoral research associate (PDRA) position will advance our understanding of the mechanical properties of bones from children affected by metabolic diseases, combining biomechanical experiments, micro-Computed Tomography imaging, Digital Volume Correlation, and Nanoindentation.

 The position is funded as part of the project 鈥�ChildBone: A novel digital twin to assess bone strength in children鈥�, funded by the EPSRC. The PDRA will work in Professor Enrico Dall鈥橝ra鈥檚 group and will be embedded in a collaborative environment including the project PI (Dr Xinshan Li, Mechanical Engineering) and the other co-Applicants (Professor Damien Lacroix, Mechanical Engineering; Professor Amaka Offiah, Clinical Medicine; Professor Marta Cohen, Sheffield Children's Hospital).  The PDRA will combine the above-mentioned techniques to characterise the mechanical competence of paediatric bones and to provide a unique dataset to inform and validate computational models that aim at predicting the bone strength and risk of fracture in children with metabolic diseases. 

The ideal candidate will have an excellent PhD in bone biomechanics (or a related discipline), possess a solid knowledge of mechanical testing, micro-Computed Tomography imaging, and Nanoindentation.

Ensuring the achievement of the project objectives will advance the vision of the Insigneo Institute to validate computational models for the musculoskeletal system and produce a transformational impact on healthcare. The PDRA will also sustain and strengthen collaboration within relevant Insigneo research groups and beyond; and will commit to Insigneo鈥檚 mission to produce high quality cutting-edge research.

Research Associate in Computational Bone Biomechanics

Are you interested in better understanding the properties of children鈥檚 bones and how they fracture?

We are recruiting a dedicated Postdoctoral Research Associate for the multi-disciplinary EPSRC funded ChildBone project (EP/Z536118/1) in collaboration with Sheffield Children鈥檚 Hospital and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The aim of this innovative project is to develop and validate digital twin of paediatric bones and investigate biomarkers to accurately predict bone strength, particularly in relation to different serum vitamin D levels.

We are looking for a well-organised and creative engineer to join us on this adventure. The ideal candidate will have a PhD (or be about to submit your thesis) in biomechanics and finite element analysis. A proven track record of publications in high-quality peer reviewed journals. Previous experience in bone biomechanics and non-linear finite element analysis are essential. A strong background in creating personal-specific computer model or digital twin is preferred. You will have excellent data analysis, scientific programming, and communication skills and be able to plan and organise your time effectively. You will be based in Sheffield and will work with academic and clinical collaborators in this project. You will also be supported and encouraged to present project outputs at national and international conferences.

Team

You will be part of the Integrative Musculoskeletal Biomechanics (IMSB) group within the Insigneo Institute. You will actively engage with the activities organised by the IMSB group. The IMSB is formed by eleven principal investigators and their teams (in total ~40 members), with expertise in multiscale computational modelling, experimental validation and imaging in musculoskeletal biomechanics. You will work collaboratively with other colleagues within the IMSB group, the Skelet.AL laboratory, and the Insigneo Institute to validate the digital twin for children鈥檚 bones. You will have the opportunity to learn from several principal investigators involved in this project, participate to project meetings within the team and the IMSB group. Together with the project team, you will also participate in patient and public involvement and engagement events for project dissemination.

This post is fixed-term for 34 months with a start date from 1st September 2025 or until 1st November 2025.
